Insurance comparison FAQs

Clear answers about how cover, claims, and CompareNow's service actually work.

General

What happens if my health changes after taking out a policy?

Once a Fidelity Life policy is in force, your existing cover is generally protected as long as you continue paying premiums. Future premium adjustments follow the terms in your policy document. Your adviser can explain how health changes affect new applications versus existing policies.

Can I get Fidelity Life cover through an adviser?

Yes. Fidelity Life products are distributed through registered financial advisers. CompareNow works with licensed NZ advisers who can compare Fidelity Life with other leading insurers and recommend the policy that best fits your situation.

Does Fidelity Life pay claims?

Yes. Fidelity Life paid 93% of all claims received (by value) in its most recently reported period. The company has operated in New Zealand since 1973 and holds a financial strength rating of A- (Excellent) from AM Best.

How much does Fidelity Life insurance cost?

Fidelity Life premiums depend on the type of cover, the amount insured, your age, and your health history. Because each policy is individually underwritten, a licensed adviser can give you an accurate quote based on your specific circumstances. Most quotes are ready within one working day.

How is CompareNow paid?

CompareNow is paid a standard adviser commission by the insurer if you take out cover through us. The commission is the same rate the insurer pays any adviser, so your premium isn't higher because you came through us. From 1 June 2026, CompareNow commits 10% of every first-year premium to New Zealand charities supporting children in poverty and single mothers.

Will my premiums go up each year?

It depends on what policy you select. Traditional stepped premiums do increase each year on your policy anniversary. Level premiums do not increase with your age for a specified period of time.

Am I locked into the cover for a certain period?

No. If you cancel your policy in the first 14 days your premiums will be refunded. After the 14 day free look period you are able to cancel your cover at any time.

Do I pay CompareNow?

No. Comparing cover and talking to one of our licensed advisers is free to you. We're paid by the insurer if you decide to take out a policy, at the standard rate they pay any adviser. Your premium is the same as going direct. The difference: instead of seeing one insurer's offer, you've compared leading NZ insurers side by side, with a licensed adviser helping you choose the right cover.

How can I pay my premiums?

You can choose your method of payment you prefer e.g., Credit card, monthly Direct Debit or Cheque.

What Insurance Providers do you compare?

CompareNow compares cover from leading New Zealand insurers, including AIA, Asteron Life, Chubb Life, Fidelity Life, Partners Life, and Southern Cross for life and income protection, plus nib for health insurance. Between them they cover life, health, trauma, income protection, and mortgage protection insurance. Your adviser will work with the insurers most relevant to the cover types you're looking at.

Do you offer advice?

Yes. Every CompareNow comparison includes access to a licensed New Zealand financial adviser at no extra cost. They can answer your questions, explain how policies compare across insurers, and recommend the cover that fits your situation. Whether you use that service or compare on your own is entirely your call.

Do I have to pay on fortnightly basis?

No. You can choose your payment frequency i.e. weekly, fortnightly, monthly or on an annual basis.

Are medical tests required?

In most cases no medical tests are required. Each application is considered on an individual basis. If you are required to undergo any medical test they will be paid for by the insurance provider and at no cost to you.

Can I apply directly with the insurance providers for cheaper cost?

No. Most insurance providers prefer to work through intermediaries like us rather than dealing directly. We don’t mark up policies. In fact, we guarantee your premium is the same as going direct.

Do life insurance policies pay out on terminal illness?

Yes. If you are diagnosed as terminally ill and are likely to die within 12 months, most life insurance policies will pay out.

What premium payment frequency options do I have?

Depending on the provider the payment options include: fortnightly, monthly, quarterly, bi-annually, or annually.

Can I change my insurance provider?

In most cases you can, however it is important to understand the potential risks. For more information give us a call.
